It was disappointing but I remember everyone sticking together - supporters and players - none of the histrionics of the little proms Donna wankers of today - the attitutude of the players was to get get back to Div 1 ASAP none of our stars Brooking Bonds Holland Kamoard etc wanted to leave - I remember our first home game of Div 2 we were 4-0 up in 20 mins against Notts County - that was the first season I went to every home game and plenty of aways . In fact the team was strengthened!
No doom and gloom we just got on with it - and we were a big scalp back in the day in that Division ⚒⚒⚒

My point being if Lyall was manager now would we want him out as in the case of bilic and miss out on a near 10 years of success 2 cup finals promotion and highest placed finish. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but did Lyall make the same mistakes as Bilic

What the cearns that broke the world record fee for a goalkeeper and paid £800,000 for paul goddard? Im not saying he was great but fuck me compared to this lot he was magnificent

I remember feeling gutted and we went to the pub after. Enjoyed the following 3 seasons 80/81 was one of the best ever.

Don't remeber the board sayoing anything back then, unlike Sullivan when he took over in Jan 2010

"It'll be Armageddon if we go down. It'll be worse than what's gone on at Newcastle,"

Then he relegates us a year later !!!

was at the 0 - 2 lose to Liverpool, who had already won the title, and the stand-out memory was Graeme Souness kicking lumps out of our midfield like some kind of mustachio macho hard man - hated him from that day - the relegation was inevitable - no tears or antics just see you next season

Terry Brown was to blame instead of kicking on Brown sold most of our best players.

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
Obviously nobody was happy at being relegated but most of us didn't blame Lysol as much as the board

Lyall managed to build a fairly decent side on a shoestring then got forced to flog off his best players by the tight-arsed board

Anyone who thinks the current board are bad should think back to the Cearns days!

We've always had fans wanting the manager out. Nobody has been exempt

I wasn't a regular back then but there was not the stigma and loss of revenue associated with relegation to the 2nd Division in those days.

In fact at various times I quite enjoyed going to games at 2nd Div. clubs where there was often a really good atmosphere and cheap as chips turn up and pay at the gate...

What a completely pointless question, 2 completely different era's, which are not comparable.

If you have to ask a question like this at least swap 78 for 89.

I can't believe it either cheese

Let's face it ..we all have a moan up with what's happening now on the pitch..in truth..it's never been any different really.
Just the attitudes towards it.

The Lyall out sentiment was simmering for a while, but came to a head after we capitulated in that cup game v Barnsley.

In fact, I found that game and you can hear the chants begin after they equalise.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TptOV7a9Hw

I can't believe it's nearly 30 years ago. I remember those days better than this season.

Yea..89 the lyall banners were on parade.
With the players we had ..it shouldn't of happened.
Sad end for John.

Don't know if you have read his autobiography. ..it came out a couple of yrs after he departed.
He stated how much he loved the fans..and how special they were.

77/78 was my first year as a west ham fan. Don't remember much of it, mind.

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
I remember it quite well. We slept walked into relegation that season. Sure, we had often flirted with the relegation zone during the 70's but we never thought that we would actually go down. After all, we had just spent 20 years in the First Division at that time and we had always managed to pull away from the bottom two/three with weeks to spare.

At the end of the 77-78 season, however, we found ourselves in the relegation zone and with a last home match against Liverpool. The threat that year was very real, especially against our nemesis, the all conquering Liverpool, which we lost 2-0. I remember walking down Green Street after the match, there was an incredulous and stunned silence and no one could believe that we had finally gone. Saying that, it was an opportunity to rid the club of all the dead wood from the squad and there was an optimism that we would come straight back up.

In those days the best players weren't necessarily flogged off after a relegation, so we hung on to the Bonds, Brookings, Lampards, Cross's, etc. As it happened, it took three seasons to come back but we won the FA Cup and built a strong and exciting squad along the way. As for Lyall, at that time everyone knew that we had a gem of a manager and he certainly didn't come in for any criticism. Unfortunately, our relegation in 89 was the opposite story and many fans were getting on his back, very much like Wenger is now at Arsenal.

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
We knew our place back then.
Renowned for playing a certain style..with a soft underbelly.
A tight community club loyal to its managers.
But a club that always lacked ambition..we as fans accepted that.

But times were different then..very different.

there wasn't the same desperation to be seen as a big club nor the sense of entitlement that we have to win trophies or else we've been betrayed.

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
I was a kid so don't remember it that well, but I don't think there was quite the hostility there would be now. We'd been on the cusp for a while and there wasn't the same desperation to be seen as a big club nor the sense of entitlement that we have to win trophies or else we've been betrayed.
It wasn't such a big deal then anyway. A player could still be picked for England from Div 2 and it didn't always mean losing all your good players. It also didn't mean the club missed out on huge amounts of money or exotic transfers.
I think the days of the internet mean that we expect to know every little detail of whats happening behind the scenes as if we were part of it. But then, what we got in the newspaper was what we got.
